Chão dos Louros with a new orienteering map in the heart of Laurissilva.

In my opinion one of the most incredible and challenging terrains for orienteering in Portugal. Map produced in 2021 in times of a pandemic, very difficult to map since there is no base map, nor GPS signal on these slopes of closed woods.

Thanks to Clube Aventura da Madeira for the courage to carry out this project.

A cartographer on the cover of a Swedish newspaper

Cartography is the work I chose and it allows me, in each project, to enjoy unbelievable places. It’s a hard work, but I love it, where every day I have to maintain a certain routine and discipline to be efficient and productive.

Precisely 10 years ago, I made my first map in Sweden for the first time. Since then, every summer is spent working in Scandinavia or France on some of the most challenging terrain (all my work at Main Maps).

After 4 maps made in Sweden in the last 2 months, I had the pleasure, on my return to Tavelsjön (Umeå), to be interviewed to talk a little more about my profession which, in these countries, assumes another importance and recognition.

New map Ponta do Sol in Madeira

This new map was used by Associação Retoiça, a recent club in the region that is holding its second orienteering event.

It is with great pride and satisfaction that I have helped in the mapping and planning of the routes. With the great collaboration of the Municipality and the Casa do Povo of Ponta do Sol and Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, which even allowed the route to begin and to pass through its magnificent facilities.

Maze-O in Boaventura

A Retoiça – Associação Cultural, Desportiva e Recreativa has demonstrated that it knows how to host and prepare an event of excellence. Good luck to all for allowing you to create another orienteering map in Boaventura.

For the first time we had “Maze-O” during a sprint course in the region, it was a way to enhance options on the football field.

First use in competition of the Rånäs (Sweden) map produced in 2018-2019

A 12km² map project in Clermont Ferrand (France) has just finished “coming out of the oven”, a super challenger carried out for two consecutive summers and, already in Portugal, I have the privilege of following a race (DM, medel, Uppland), at Sweden, the world capital of orienteering.

It is with great pride and pleasure that I watch this competition, being this other cartography work that I produced in 2018 and 2019 in Rånäs. This test thus marks the debut on a terrain / map never navigated before and which is only part of the cartography carried out (totaling 16 km²), leaving open the possibility of realizing other future events, with some already planned for this same map, in the near future.

After all, sharing is always a good time to become aware of the fruit of our work and very rewarding when we are valued for it.

Map Making in Vulcania (France)

Clermont Ferrand, in particular the Parc des Volcans d´Auvergne, is a dream for the practice of Orienteering and Trail. It took more than 4 months, divided by two summers, of intense work to do the ‘Cheire du Puy de Come’ map, in the same area as the 2006 Puy-de-Dôme Long World Cup.

This terrain, which is considered by many to be the most difficult orienteering forest in the world, was another stimulating professional challenge for me. I had been in these fields in the past, even representing the national team, but I never imagined receiving a job offer for this area.

I would not imagine having the capacity and it is a privilege to work in this place that also has the particularity of being next to the main training center of the Federation Française de Course d’Orientation, where the best youth and junior athletes of the French country live.

In the end, we have a very detailed project with 12 km2 mapped in total, in which, this year, I had the company of map maker Rafael Miguel for two weeks.

Map Making for Madeira Orienteering Festival 2021

Madeira Island has its own altimetry and fauna and due to its multifaceted characteristics, it becomes a place of choice for multiple Outdoor activities, namely, Orienteering.

On this island there are still some high quality terrains for Orienteering events, yet to be explored.

In this sense, for a long time I wanted to enlarge the map of Fanal, the oldest forest in Madeira, and this objective came to fruition with this map making project.

Also in Madeira I had the privilege of doing from scratch and enlarging the map of Poiso, which, together with Montado do Pereiro and Chão das Aboboreiras (already mapped by me for Clube Aventura da Madeira, in 2014), completes the biggest spot island forestry.

It is with this motto that I affirm that everything is gathered for a great Orienteering event, between January 14th and 17th, 2021, at the Madeira Orienteering Festival.

Map Making for Beira Alta “O” Meeting 2021

After COVID-19 confinement, I returned to map making. It was a pleasure to be back in the north of the country, and see the come back of the organization of orienteering events. I spent 3 weeks working in the municipalities of Penedono and Sernancelhe together with Rafael Miguel, with whom I have planned to make some maps.

I already knew a little of the two terrains chosen by Clube de Orientação de Viseu, but after finishing the work, the feeling is of great satisfaction and expectation for the quality of the map. I am sure that in this region of the country we will have two more high quality orienteering terrains.

Not to lose the Beira Alta “O” Meeting from 22th to 24th of January 2021.

NAOM 2020 and MOM 2020 Events

In the last few years I have developed my map making work in Sweden, Norway and France at a professional level. It has been very enriching to work and receive feedback from some of the most experienced coaches, athletes and clubs in the world (Halden-SK, French Orienteering Federation, RanasOK, Bergen FanaIL).

It was with great pride that, in the last two weekends, orienteering events were carried out on maps made by me, namely in MOM and NAOM. It is always good to come home and feel the affection of my orienteering partners and friends.

On the second day of NAOM I went back to being a “speaker” and I loved the experience.

Thank you all for the words of affection and appreciation. In 2021 I will have some more map making projects in Portugal and I am very excited!
